Book
Review - French Kisses. The Last Flea Bite?
Keith
Kellett
When
you’re writing a series of books about a certain theme, there’s a
certain danger of ‘doing the subject to death’. If any one book of
the series is picked up, it may still be an excellent read … but it’s
possible that, on reading the whole series through, the reader may
get a sense of having been there before. Fortunately, most authors
know when it’s time to leave the theme and move on, although, sadly,
in George East’s case, the move was forced upon him. .

In
‘French Kisses’ , the sixth, and latest of his amusing and refreshing
‘Mill of the Flea’ series, he tells how, under mounting pressure
from the bank, he’s forced to sell his beloved Normandy home at
the Moulin de la Puce. So, once more, we’re led with an amused tolerance,
but a tinge of sadness, through the labyrinthine process of selling
a French property, and finding and buying another. The greatest
task was finding something suitable and affordable, and, just like the man
who falls into a fosse septique, and emerges with a gold watch and
chain around his neck, George manages to do just that. His
new home seems to be in the Norman equivalent of Conan Doyle’s Great
Grimpen Mire. And, to continue the Gothic analogy, he noted on his
first day the absence of mirrors in the bar, and of garlic in the village
shop - just before meeting a neighbour bearing a strong resemblance
to the Prince of Darkness. So, we meet new neighbours, and say au
revoir, but hopefully not adieu, to the old ones. And we wait
with anticipation to see where the Flea will jump next. You can
order this ... and all George's books ... online at www.amazon.co.uk
or at www.la-puce.co.uk
